The moon and stars they wept
The morning sun was dead
The Savior of the world was fallen
His body on the cross
His blood poured out for us
The weight of every curse upon Him
A couple weeks ago we remembered the amazing sacrifice of Jesus for each and every one of us. On Good Friday, I watched The Passion of the Christ with Bryan and Anita and it hit me yet again what He went through for me, for you, for all mankind. He took our shame, was mocked and tortured. He was beaten with a cat of nine tails. This whip was pieces of leather with shards of glass at the end. Each time it hit Jesus, His skin was ripped from His body. Before He reached the cross, He was bloody and close to death just from the torture.
Then He was forced to carry a wooden cross. This wood was not finished, His sensitive skin probably felt every splinter, every bit of the heavy weight. He had to carry this heavy cross out of the city and up to Golgotha, the place where He was nailed to the cross. Nails pierced His flesh, through His feet and His hands. Yet He prayed for those who tortured Him. He prayed “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
While He was on the cross, He was mocked by the crowd and one of the two criminals crucified with him. Yet the other realized who He was, and He asked Jesus to remember Him. Jesus said “today you will be with me in paradise.”
One final breath He gave
As heaven looked away
The Son of God was laid in darkness
A battle in the grave
The war on death was waged
The power of hell forever broken
Before Jesus died, He asked God why He had forsaken Him. God couldn’t look on the sin Jesus carried into death. The sin of each and every one of us. Jesus, who was perfect, without sin, took our sin on Himself and our punishment. He did that so each and every one of us could have eternal life with Him if we just believe. But it wasn’t over with His death.
The ground began to shake
The stone was rolled away
His perfect love could not be overcome
Now death where is your sting?
Our resurrected King
Has rendered you defeated
By rising on the third day, Jesus overcame death. He defeated it. The battle is over, He’s already won.
(Now) Forever He is glorified
Forever He is lifted high
(And) Forever He is risen
He is alive, He is alive
He is alive! I just want to shout it out, He is alive! Our God is alive! And because of His sacrifice, we have forever to praise His name. He has overcome!
We sing Hallelujah, we sing Hallelujah
We sing Hallelujah
The Lamb has overcome
